The German barque Auguste went aground on Atherfield Ledge, IW in February 1900, having been caught in a tremendous southerly gale. All the crew were eventually rescued but the ship was a total loss.

Castlehaven, also known as Reeth bay, is really the only piece of accessible shore that Niton has. It is used regularly by local fishermen. There is very little beach at high tide and so there are never many people, but it has wonderful scenery of sea, rocks and cliffs for painters.
